Start Yachting

The RYA Start Yachting course is a perfect way to learn to sail and experience yachting first hand, this course is offered as a taster, suitable for beginners and those looking to see if yachting is for them.

Sailing the coastal waters of Southern Spain and Morocco and visiting popular marinas such as Sotogrande, Duquesa, Ceuta and many more, this is a great yachting and sailing experience with the advantage of a recognised RYA certificate on successful completion.

No pre-course knowledge is required and the course duration is 2 days, under 18’s must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

This course concentrates on steering, sail handling and safety.

RYA Competent Crew

The RYA Competent Crew Sailing course is an ideal opportunity to increase your yachting knowledge. This practical Sailing course helps you become an active member of the crew rather than just a passenger.

This course takes you a little further afield for a full 5 days yachting visiting Mediterranean and Atlantic marinas. Sample a great yachting and sailing experience along the coast of Southern Spain and Morocco with the benefit of an RYA qualification unpon successful completion.

No pre-course knowledge is required and the course duration is 5 days, under 18’s must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

This course concentrates on nautical terminology, helmsmanship and safety.

RYA Day Skipper

The RYA Day Skipper Sailing Course is the first step to you ‘taking charge’. This course is offered to sailors who want to be able to skipper a yacht in daylight hours in familiar waters.

This course is one of the best ways to sample 5 full days sailing on our school yacht calling at various marinas in the Mediterranean on the coast of Southern Spain, Morocco or the Tidal Atlantic ports of Cadiz for example. A great chance for great sailing and yachting with an RYA Day Skipper certificate of Competence upon successful completion.

Suggested pre-course knowledge – Competent Crew, estimated position, idea of tidal heights and streams, basic chartwork and seamanship. The shorebased course expected/ideal but not vital.

Course duration is 5 days, under 18’s (minimum 16) must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

This course concentrates on pilotage and boat handling.

RYA Coastal Skipper

You will sail around the Strait of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea in Southern Spain and the Atlantic Ocean, gaining more experience as a Skipper. The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Sailing Course is not for the novice and features advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation.

This RYA Coastal Sailing Course brings you a fantastic opportunity to achieve a Course Completion Certificate upon successful completion. This will test and reward you and enable you to get out there and sail. Build up your miles and confidence. Experience different boats and different sailing areas before undertaking your independent DoT/MCA/RYA examination at either Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore level.

Suggested pre-course knowledge – 2 days as skipper, be able to plan a passage and make decisions without frequent help. Coastal/Yachtmaster shore based expected/ideal but not vital.

Course duration is 5 days, under 18’s (minimum 17) must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

This course concentrates on boat handling in confined spaces, extensive sailing and the days training will be long.

Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence

The Coastal Skipper should have the knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on coastal cruises but does not necessarily have the experience needed to undertake longer passages. Candidates may be asked questions on any part of the syllabus for all practical and shorebased courses up to Coastal Skipper.

Pre-exam requirement
To take the practical examination, candidates must have:

Radio Operators Qualification – a restricted (VHF only) radio operator’s certificate or a GMDSS short range certificate or higher grades of marine radio certificate.
First Aid
– a valid first aid certificate. First Aid qualifications held by Police, Fire and Armed Services are also acceptable.
Seatime – 800 miles logged within 10 years prior to examination, 30 days living on board, 2 days as skipper and 12 night hours.

For holders of the Coastal Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate, the seatime requirement is reduced to: 400 miles, 20 days living on board, 12 night hours, 2 days as skipper.

Half the qualifying seatime must have been conducted in tidal waters.

Course duration is 5 days plus 1 day for exam, under 18’s (minimum 17) must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence

The Yachtmaster Offshore is competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour. Candidates may be asked questions on any part of the syllabus for all courses except Yachtmaster Ocean.

Pre-exam requirement
To take the practical examination, candidates must have:

Radio Operators Qualification – a restricted (VHF only) radio operator’s certificate or a GMDSS short range certificate or higher grades of marine radio certificate.
First Aid – a valid first aid certificate. First Aid qualifications held by Police, Fire and Armed Services are also acceptable.
Seatime
– 50 days, 2500 miles, including at least 5 passages over 60 miles acting as skipper for at least two of these passages and including two of which involved overnight passages. 5 days experience as skipper.

For holders of the Coastal Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate, the seatime requirement is reduced to: 400 miles, 20 days living on board, 12 night hours, 2 days as skipper.

Half the qualifying seatime must have been conducted in tidal waters.

Course duration is 5 days plus 1 day for exam, over 18’s only.
